We recently researched our readers’ opinions on The Future Homes Standard, and a White Paper outlining the research’s key findings is now available to download.
With buildings accounting for 40% of the UK’s carbon emissions – and housing accounting for around 15% – as COP26 comes to an end there’s now a focus on phasing out fossil fuels and introducing higher building standards.
The Future Homes Standard 2025 is a concerted attempt to tackle the problem in a way previous administrations have failed to – a series of measures that within four years will require new homes to produce 75-80% less carbon emissions than current Building Regulations. From 2025, new homes will no longer be heated using fossil fuels, and will also need to be designed to a higher thermal performance so they need ‘no further retrofitting’ to become zero carbon in 2050.
Despite the laudable ambitions, the FHS is not without its opponents, and it will prove challenging to achieve for many construction firms. Our survey finds out what housebuilders and developers really think about this important new standard.
