FaulknerBrowns Architects has been announced as the masterplanner and lead architects of a sustainable new urban quarter at St James’ Gate in Dublin, home to the Guinness Brewery for over 261 years.
FaulknerBrowns were appointed by Ballymore to design their proposals to redevelop a 12-acre site, freed up by modernisation of the brewery, for Diageo, Guiness’ parent company.
The project represents one of the most significant development and regeneration opportunities in Dublin and Ireland. Ballymore’s vision for the Guiness Quarter is to create the city’s first zero carbon district, with up to 500 homes, offices, commercial space, community facilities and public realm.
The proposals look to re-imagine the site’s future while respecting its iconic heritage. St. James’s Gate is home to a rich assortment of historic buildings and structures, many of which can be retrofitted and re-used.
Consultation on the emerging masterplan is now underway, with a planning application expected to be submitted to Dublin City Council in 2022.
Niall Durney, Associate Partner at FaulknerBrowns, said:
“As masterplan and lead architects, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to work with Ballymore and our collaborators to craft a major new piece of Dublin city centre. The 261 years of existing fabric on this iconic site is the best possible starting point in creating a major visitor destination and sustainable urban quarter.”
