‘Get it Right First Time’ to meet Net Zero, say architects

A pioneering approach to building and home design is putting sustainability at the forefront. An article published this week by Cowan Architects insists on a ‘Get it Right First Time’ design strategy to avoid costly repairs, meet regulatory requirements and mitigate reputational risks.

The article powerfully illustrates the importance of achieving Net Zero carbon emissions in buildings through retrofitting existing structures.
This article is the second in a ground-breaking three-part series by Cowan Architects. Their first article, ‘Home quality starts with safety, the customer priority‘, argued that safety should be at the core of any construction strategy. This new article builds on that foundation, highlighting how technological innovation and meticulous design is essential for achieving Net Zero goals. The overall focus of the trilogy is on ‘Getting it Right First Time’.

Cowan Architects’ article makes a strong business case for high-quality, resilient design that addresses rising energy and construction costs while complying with the Building Safety Act 2022. It stresses the crucial need for thorough financial viability assessment, strong collaboration and communication, and a solid understanding of whole-life carbon.

Simon Spiteri, co-author of ‘‘Retrofitting for Net Zero: Get it Right First Time,’’ and Director at Cowan Architects, explained, ‘Through innovation and collaboration, we’re shaping a future where high-quality, low-emittance homes are the norm.’

He added, ‘Our ‘Get it Right First Time’ strategy emphasises the critical role of planning and meticulous design in mitigating risks and achieving sustainability goals. Those that adopt this approach will add significant value for all their stakeholders.’
