Pioneering British modernist designers and architects, John and Sylvia Reid A/A.R.I.B.A., PP/F.S.I.A., are set to become household names again, thanks to the re-issue of their iconic S-Range, designed in 1960.
Sylvia Reid, who is now in her 90s, has given the go-ahead to her son Dominic Reid OBE RIBA to oversee the re-issue of the classic range of furniture, in collaboration with Nicholas Radford, md of Nathan Furniture.
The John and Sylvia Reid S-Range, which comprises 13 pieces of cabinet and upholstered furniture, has been faithfully recreated to the Reids’ original specifications. The sideboards and storage units, all crafted in teak, feature the original design detailing, including beech interior, distinctive V shaped legs in brushed satin nickel and black laminate trim.
Said Dominic:
“My mother and father established their architectural and design practice in 1948, after working with leading British designers, such as Maxwell Fry, Jane Drew, Milner Gary and Robin and Lucienne Day. They remained in practice right up until 1992, building a cultural legacy which includes everything from the iconic – but now sadly demolished − 1966 Westminster Theatre, to the Wheatsheaf pub in Camberley, Surrey − one of five post-war pubs to be recently designated Grade II status on the advice of Historic England.”
“Their canon of industrial design is no less impressive, counting several Council of Industrial Design award winning light fittings, including revolutionary adjustable spotlights designed for Rotaflex in 1961 and original prototype underfloor heating which they designed and installed in their home in Oulton Broad.”
“The furniture my parents designed for Stag throughout the 1950s and 60s fitted with their modernist ideals, being practical and accessible, as well as contemporary and aspirational. The current enthusiasm for mid-century architecture and interiors is a wonderful opportunity for my parents’ work to finally gain the recognition it deserves.”
The range, launched at this year’s Clerkenwell Design Week, also incorporates some of the couple’s innovative design features, such as 270-degree hinges on the cabinet doors − enabling access to the full interior space – and ingenious swivel feet on the dining chairs for added stability. Each piece carries a metal badge of authentication.
